The leather industry in India owes its origin and growth to the strong and wide spread livestock base in the country. India has a large variety of slaughter sites varying from simple slaughter slabs to very modern slaughterhouses; some of which are with the industrial processing units without waste treatment facilities. The age old process of raw hides and skin collection, transportation and marketing is still continuing with minor changes in India. There are several tanneries in India for processing these raw hides and skin into a wide range of end products with different tanning processes. The finished leather is used by leather industries for the production of leather items, where footwear and garments are a priority. The waste from the leather industries and tanneries are used by other allied industries for byproduct manufacturing.

This chapter emphasizes the leather production process with all its allied industries involved in the network and the export market for leather. To read more>>
