Asia Pro Eco is a five-year multi-country European Union
initiative, launched in 2002, which is based on experience and inputs provided
by the former Asia Eco Best Programme, building on the world's growing concerns
about environmental issues.
Asia Pro Eco is designed to strengthen the environmental dialogue
between Asia and Europe through the exchange of policies, technologies and best
practices that promote more resource-efficient, market driven, and sustainable
solutions to environmental problems in Asia. The progamme aims to
support a series of preventive and corrective actions, which materialise in
technical solutions that contribute to both quality of life and economic
prosperity in Asia. The Programme provides support through grants.
There are a number of common challenges shared across the Asian
region, which in the view of their general nature make sense to address in
multi-country programmes. Environmental protection and sustainable
development is one of these challenges. Pollution respects no boundaries and
its effects are increasingly global. Environmental problems at local and
regional levels can be prevented by sharing information, using the right
technology, by endorsing corrective and preventive policies as well as
effective regulations.
In this context, Asian countries conduct a
policy dialogue on environment in international frameworks that may be fed with
European experience, expertise, and technology. In short, these issues
are best addressed by multi-country programmes, as they provide opportunities
that purely national programmes often lack.
